Coffee lovers know that when you are looking for a great coffee, that one of the first things you should look for is if the coffee is a single origin coffee. This is a descriptive term for coffee that encases a couple of different facets of how and where the coffee is grown.

Many times people will refer to a coffee that is grown in a geographical location as single origin. While this may be true, the term single origin can actually be a little more specific than that. Even though this is single origin coffee, you can get coffee that comes from different farms and locations within a country.

There are two main types of single origin coffee that you will find. The two of them are listed below:

1. Estate Coffees are coffees that are grown on a single farm. This may be a large to midsize farm that has multiple lots on which they are growing the same bean. The farmers will then harvest the beans when they are ready and mix them with the same type of beans from all of the different lots where the beans were grown. Even though it will be the same type of bean, there may be differences in the flavor since the beans may have been grown in different soil, and harvested at different times. Other times this type of coffee may be grown by different farmers on different farms and mixed if those farmers use the same mill to process their coffee.

Ethiopian Tchembe

Wonderful Blueberry Muffin Coffee, with cocoa butter and dried banana, slightly tart acidity. A very versatile coffee, making incredible espresso shots, but also with enough acidity to carry the flavors into a drip pot and french press. The cup softens a bit on cooling, as body thickens with butter, chocolate, and sweet banana wine flavor, while the finish becomes progressively, pleasantly dry, slightly chalky as cup cools.

2. Micro Lot Coffee refers to a coffee that is a little different from estate coffees is such that they are grown on smaller farms. Since small farms typically do not have the ability to spread the same bean over multiple lots, this type of coffee will come from the same lot and be harvested at all at once, and be grown within the same altitude range. This type of single origin coffee will give you the best flavor since all of the beans involved will be grown in the exact environment and handled in the exact manner by the farmer.

Colombian Micro-Lot

This coffee is sweet! The dry fragrance has peach hints, and cane sugar sweetness in the aromas. The wet aroma reveals some balanced spices and a caramel sweetness which produces a very nice cup in press or drip. This coffee was purchased through a farm-direct Colombia program, and has been designated as a Micro-lot, processed separately, and a premium price is returned to the farmer.
